Flooding in the Amazon Basin (update)
Since the beginning of our first journey to the Amazon jungle in 2019, we fell in love with the Ashaninka people - their rich culture, their traditional way of life, and their unwavering commitment to protecting the land. Living along the Ene River, these communities have lived in harmony with nature for generations, standing strong against the forces of industrialisation and climate change.
But last year, their world was shaken.
Unprecedented rainfall caused the riverbanks to overflow, flooding over 5,000 hectares of land. Homes, schools, crops - and lives - were lost. Over 300 families were left with no clean water, no shelter, and no access to food or basic necessities. Decades of love and labour were washed away, including entire fields of wild-crafted cacao that have been the heart of our partnership and their livelihood.
This was a crisis no one could prepare for. And yet, something extraordinary happened.
Together, we raised over $25,000AUD
Thanks to your generosity - through donations, cacao parties, and heartfelt support - we were able to respond quickly, delivering urgent disaster relief where it was needed most. Clean water, food supplies, clothing, mattresses, and temporary shelters are now reaching families, coordinated by our trusted partners at CARE and the Peruvian military.
But the work isn’t done.
Despite the damage, we’re seeing hope rise from the soil. Many of the cacao trees in higher regions survived, and thanks to your support, our wild-crafted cacao project continues to grow.
This is more than a product - it's a pathway to self-sufficiency, climate resilience, and cultural preservation. Every batch of Sacred Cacao purchased supports this ongoing recovery. And every ceremony, sip, and share brings us one step closer to restoring what was lost.
We Still Need Your Help
While the initial wave of support helped us respond fast, the next phase - rebuilding homes, replanting crops, and restoring infrastructure - requires ongoing commitment.
Here’s how you can continue to help:
- $15 still provides clean water for a family
- $30 buys a week’s worth of food
- $60 gives a family essential clothing
- $150 supplies mattresses and blankets
- $500 or more helps rebuild a damaged home or school
If you feel called to give again, your donation - no matter the size - will directly support Ashaninka families rebuilding their lives.
