What is Ceremonial Cacao?

MORE THAN JUST A SUPERFOOD

WILD-CRAFTED         INDIGENOUS-GROWN        CEREMONIAL GRADE        REGENERATIVE CACAO

Grown

Ceremonial cacao comes from the heirloom Criollo cacao, grown in biodiverse rainforest regions. Unlike plantation cacao, it is cultivated with reverence through traditional methods to protect ecosystems, and sustain Indigenous farming practices. This results in cacao with higher nutrient content and spiritual benefit.

Harvested

Cacao pods are harvested by hand when fully ripe, then split open to remove the beans. The beans are fermented for several days, a key step that develops their rich flavor and boosts nutrient availability. After fermentation, they are sun-dried to preserve quality without the need for chemicals or artificial processing.

Processed

The dried beans are lightly roasted, then ground into a paste without separating the cocoa butter. Unlike commercial cocoa powders and chocolate, ceremonial grade cacao contains no added sugar, fillers, or dairy. This minimal processing preserves its natural compounds and enhances it's spiritual benefits.

Prepared

At Sacred, we prefer to prepare our ceremonial cacao the pure way: using 100% Ceremonial Cacao paste, spring water, and intention. Made like this, you can fully experience the medicine of cacao while tasting the natural undertones gifted by the rainforest. It is the only way to truly connect with this sacred plant medicine.

What is a Cacao Ceremony?

ANCIENT RITUALS FOR MODERN PROBLEMS

Traditional Cacao Ceremonies

For over 5,000 years, Indigenous cultures such as the Olmec, Maya, and Aztec honoured cacao as sacred. Prepared as a rich, bitter drink, it was used in ceremonies to connect with the divine, open the heart, and strengthen community. Beyond ritual, cacao was valued as both currency and a symbol of life and abundance.

Modern Cacao Gatherings

Today, cacao ceremonies are practiced around the world. While the settings may differ, the intention remains the same. To share cacao as a tool for presence, creativity, and connection. Scientific research now supports what ancient cultures knew: cacao relaxes the nervous system, lifts mood, and deepens connection.

A Bridge Between worlds

Cacao is a bridge between ancient ceremony and modern ritual. The Maya revered it as a divine gift, used to open the heart and strengthen connection within community. Today, cacao is guiding us back to these roots - reconnecting us with the land, with nature, with each other, and with ourselves.

FAQs

What is a Cacao Ceremony?

A cacao ceremony is a guided ritual where participants drink pure ceremonial-grade cacao in a sacred setting. These ceremonies trace back thousands of years to the Olmec, Maya, and Aztec cultures, where cacao was seen as a divine gift and used to open the heart, access higher states of awareness, and strengthen community bonds. In a modern cacao ceremony, the focus is on intention: slowing down, connecting with yourself, and sharing space with others. Unlike hot chocolate or cocoa drinks, ceremonial cacao is pure, minimally processed, and prepared in a way that preserves its natural compounds and energetic qualities. This makes a cacao ceremony both a nourishing practice for the body and a meaningful ritual for the mind and spirit.

Why is Cacao considered sacred?

Cacao is considered sacred because of its history, symbolism, and effects. The Maya called it kakaw and referred to it as the “Food of the Gods,” using it in offerings to deities and in ceremonies to mark births, marriages, and transitions. It was valued so highly that cacao beans were even used as currency. Beyond its cultural significance, cacao has natural compounds such as theobromine, magnesium, and phenylethylamine that relax the body, expand blood flow, and create a sense of openness. These qualities make cacao a heart medicine, a plant that not only nourishes the body but also supports emotional healing, spiritual connection, and unity with nature and community.

What happens during a Cacao Ceremony?

A cacao ceremony usually begins by setting intentions before drinking cacao together in a circle. The cacao is prepared in its pure form and consumed slowly, allowing its effects to gently unfold. Many facilitators weave in practices such as guided meditation, breathwork, music, chanting, or dance to deepen the experience. Theobromine in cacao provides calm, sustained energy without the crash of caffeine, while magnesium relaxes the nervous system and enhances focus. As a result, participants often feel more present, creative, and connected. A cacao ceremony is not about altering consciousness like other plant medicines but about returning to balance, opening the heart, and creating a safe space for reflection and connection.

What are the benefits of a Cacao Ceremony?

The benefits of a cacao ceremony span physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. On a physical level, ceremonial cacao is packed with antioxidants that support cardiovascular health, magnesium that relieves stress and muscle tension, and theobromine that provides a natural mood and energy boost. On an emotional level, cacao ceremonies often help people release stress, process emotions, and feel more open and connected to themselves and others. Spiritually, cacao is seen as a gentle but powerful plant medicine that helps participants drop into meditation, connect with their heart space, and access deeper insights or creativity. Unlike stimulants that push the body, cacao works in harmony with it, offering sustainable energy and emotional clarity. This makes it a unique superfood and ritual ally for modern life.

Is a Cacao Ceremony safe for everyone?

Cacao is a natural plant medicine that is safe for most people when consumed with reverence and intention. A full ceremonial dose is around 40g of pure cacao, while a gentle or introductory dose is closer to 20g. At Sacred, we recommend 25g as the perfect balance for experiencing the full benefits without feeling overwhelmed. Because cacao increases blood flow and stimulates the heart, those with heart conditions, high blood pressure, or taking antidepressants such as SSRIs or MAOIs should consult a healthcare professional before joining a ceremony. Pregnant or breastfeeding women may also prefer a lighter dose. When approached mindfully, cacao ceremonies offer a safe and powerful way to support wellness, presence, and connection. The key is always listening to your body, honoring the dosage, and choosing high-quality ceremonial grade cacao.
